First held in 1989 as part of the Alabama Reunion,
the City Stages festival presents 150 performances
on ten stages in and around Linn Park in downtown
Birmingham. Past visitors include Al Green,
Lynryd Skynrd, George Clinton and the Robert
Cray Band.
An annual fixture since 1983 and travelling
to a different city each year, the Alabama Sports
Festival State Games bring 50 sporting disciplines
to Birmingham in this Olympic-style event.
First held in 1999, the Sidewalk Moving Picture
Festival now shows some 200 films to an audience
of 12,000. It brings independent features, shorts,
documentaries and student films, as well as
a screenwriting competition, to venues throughout
Birmingham.
From sea lions to cheetahs, Birmingham Zoo is
home to more than 750 animals of 250 species
and welcomes 450,000 visitors every year. Highlights
include the Hugh Kaul Children's Zoo, a US$15-million
anchor exhibit dedicated to children and devoted
to urban, rural and wild animals and environs
of Alabama.
Enjoy breathtaking views of the Greater Birmingham
area from Vulcan Park, home to the world's largest
cast iron statue. The park includes various
indoor and outdoor facilities and an observation
tower.
Built in 1881, Sloss Furnaces, consisting of
two 400-ton blast furnaces and some 40 other
buildings, are now a national historic landmark
documenting Birmingham's rich industrial past.
The on-site museum pays tribute to those labourers
who were largely responsible for Birmingham
being dubbed the "magic city".

The family-orientated Annual Labor Day Celebration
and Moon Pie Eatin' Contest is held at Tannehill
Ironworks Historical State Park. Expect craft
stalls, music, a barbecue and, of course, the
contest to see who can eat the most moon pies.
Every year, the historic 4th Avenue North business
district in Birmingham welcomes a score of jazz
musicians for this swinging outdoor food and music
festival.

Birmingham Botanical Gardens are botanical
gardens situated in Edgbaston, Birmingham,
England. The gardens are close to the centre
of Birmingham and open every day of the
year, from sunrise to sunset.
The Vulcan
statue is the largest cast iron statue in the
world and the symbol of Birmingham, Alabama. It
is the seventh-tallest free standing statue in
the United States.
